Ghirlandaio in the Tornabuoni Chapel
Mary Visits Elizabeth is one of the scenes on the right side of the Tornabuoni chapel dedicated to the life St. John the Baptist. The three lads with their backs to the viewer are said to have been painted by a young Michelangelo, apprentice in Ghirlandaio's workshop at the time. The young lady at the front of the group of three to the far right is Giovanna degli Albizi, at that time recently married to Lorenzo Tornabuoni. She died in childbirth in 1488. The last lady at the far right is Lucrezia Tornabuoni, sister to Giovanni who commissioned the frescoes from Domenico Ghirlandaio. She was married to Piero de' Medici and mother to Lorenzo il Magnifico. Ghirlandaio's work is great for the beautiful "photographs" of the time we can still admire today.
