The gnomon was added by Ignazio Danti, astronomer of Cosimo I, in 1572 and it is basically a really small opening on the marble and on the inside stained glass window that permits the sunlight to filter in and act as a sundial. The equinox and solstices can be clearly seen on the inside marble floor.
